Watching movies is one of the things that first sparked my love for photography. I remember being a teenager, walking into the Historic Oriental Theatre for the first time and being absolutely in awe. To this day, that theater remains one of my favorite places to escape and be inspired.
I’ve always been drawn to the performance arts in one form or another. Sometimes that means taking a Directing class at The Rep, an Improv Intensive at The Second City in Chicago, or even giving a lecture on 1880s photography at the Milwaukee Central Library. Creativity, to me, is a dialogue between disciplines—it keeps me fresh, curious, and deeply connected to the human stories I photograph.
Over the years, I’ve worked on several film projects in a variety of roles, including Production Designer for a local feature called The Surface, where I had the incredible opportunity to work alongside Sean Astin and Chris Mulkey.
For nearly a decade, I also worked with the Milwaukee Film Festival, leading a team of photographers who documented visiting artists, premieres, and the behind-the-scenes energy that makes film culture so vibrant. One particularly memorable experience was meeting Jerry Zucker and Jim Abrahams (the directors behind Airplane!) Mr. Zucker and I somehow ended up talking about life, and he told me that a lot of people think happiness will come when they reach a milestone goal that they have set for themselves. Zucker reminded me that its important to be present and find happiness along the way, in the little moments. (Your goal might not bring you the happiness you thought it would...) What a great reminder.
I love working with actors because you understand what it means to be present, vulnerable, and expressive. Together, we’ll create images that not only open doors but also remind you of the artistry and confidence that already lives within you.
...Jessica’s energy was so fun and happy. Her helpful direction on poses and movement helped me to loosen up and get the best out of every shot! I’ve had quite a few photo shoots in the last 10 years with some top notch photographers from places like New York, Atlanta and Los Angeles. Refinery Photo Studio by far exceeded my expectations! The photo shots totally captured me. My session here was such a happy memory. I won’t forget it!" - Amber
